Péter Tornyai was commissioned by Gewandhaus in Leipzig to prepare an orchestral arrangement of the Contrapunctus No. 5 from Bach's The Art of Fugue. The premiere took place on June 18, 2019 at Thomas Church in Leipzig. The arrangement follows the method used by Webern when instrumenting Bach’s six-part ricercar: The parts of the polyphonic texture are distributed among the instruments so that Bach’s music not only comes through, but is also interpreted anew.
