Some years ago, studying Stele, I realised for the first time how central the reworking process was in György Kurtág's work. When he used In memoriam András Mihály (Játékok, Book 6) to create the 3rd movement of Stele, he was not only doing a brilliant orchestration of it, he was recomposing. And this happened with Messages op. 34, New Messages op. 34a and so many other works, recomposing older pieces, mostly from Játékok. This gave me the courage and the desire to try my own 'games' with some pieces of Játékok. After different experiments between improvised and written arrangements, that started with the permission of Kurtág in 2011, I made a selection of 34 pieces of Játékok that I prepared for this printed version. The selection is highly subjective, some sounded orchestral already to me when I played them on the piano, others spoke to me through their simplicity or complexity. As Kurtág said 'In music making, playfulness means that the musician should trust himself to the single moment. This trust makes it possible for the music making to be creation, rather than reproduction'; this inspiring sentence has been my guide for interpretation and then very much for these arrangements made with great respect, admiration and some impertinence...I am extremely thankful to György Kurtág for his trust, openess and generosity. (Olivier Cuendet)
